Alcohol restrictions
Since July 2012 the sale and consumption of alcohol in Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory has been restricted under the Australian Government’s Stronger Futures in the Northern Territory Act 2012 (Cth) (Stronger Futures Act). Read the Act
Under the Stronger Futures Act certain communities are alcohol protected areas (APAs). In those communities it is illegal for people to possess, supply or drink alcohol.
At midnight on 16 July 2022, the Stronger Futures Act will end.
This means alcohol restrictions will be lifted in APAs unless the community asks for an extension to the current alcohol restrictions.
For more information, read about changes to alcohol restrictions in NT communities on the NT Government website.
